NEWcastle.06 is an intra-disciplinary project about being there | by laurie halsey brown | surrounding a developing relationship to place and a psychological, experiential relationship to space | third project in the beingthere series based in the Newcastle area of North East UK creates dialogue between the authors and users of 10 residential and non-residential sites | responses take form simultaneously in private | public | virtual | physical locations | an integration of responses and [dis]locations: local/global/physical/virtual/private/public in relation to time [simultaniety] are made visible in the public realm to [re]create an experience of being there | net.art piece is completed, rest of project is in process |

PRIVATE/LOCAL: art installation in a local gallery which will include an audio work based on dialogue with the authors and users, drawings based on the ‘mental map’ drawings by users and photographs which capture moments when the interior and exterior of a building collide, when private experience melds with the surrounding architecture; creating a simultaneous private and public space as well as a simultaneous architectural interior and exterior. these works give the viewer a sense of place and it's context in space, to create a fuller sense of being there.

PUBLIC/LOCAL: internet projections onto several architectural sites in Newcastle to create ‘buildings as text’. The projections will be highly visual and constantly changing movements of text fragments from dialogue with the public, and from their e-mails, of their opinions on each site to create a kind of visual poetry on the outside of the buildings. The focus of the work is to make visible the response of the public to the architecture and create a public dialogue and awareness about how architecture is experienced.

PHYSICAL/GLOBAL: publication in ‘leporelo’ design format [can be accessed from both the front and back] to become a resource guide as to how to include the public voice in the architectural process. It will also include author/user quotes onto photographs and ‘mental map’ drawings from the project as well as a CD of the audio piece created from interviews with architects and the public.

VIRTUAL/GLOBAL: NEWcastle
